Jesse was riding his gelding Blue along a trail close to the river. It was still early in the day, about 7:00. The cool morning air swirled around horse and rider, making them both feel alive, Blue especially. The sun had not broken through the early morning cloud cover. Jesse was riding an excitable Blue along at his ease when...

Jinx snorted loudly and threw her legs out proudly as she followed the trail at a lively trot. The mares rider, Katelyn Valerious... or rather Katie as she preferred, smiled when she noticed the spring in the mares step.
"You're very flightly darlin" she commented to the buckskin quarter horse. "Whats with you this mornin'?" As if to answer her riders question the 3 year old burst into a gallop and shot forward down the track. Katie understood when the pair passed another horse and rider... from her brief glance she noticed a red-head man mounted on a gelding... but that was all she saw.
It didn't look like anyone that the girl recognized, she was only new in town and had been lucky enough to find a job at the stables. But she had been working 10 hours a day that this was the only time to look around. It was hard work being the only stablehand in town. And being female put the pressure on even more, as her boss was male. From what she gathered... Deadwood was of male-domination. And that sickened Katie to the bone.

Blue was in high spirits himself that morning. The blue roan was tossing his head and chewing, exhorting all of his nervous energy on the bit in his mouth. Dread filled Jesse as he heard galloping hoof beats of another horse behind him. Instantly, he reacted as fast as he was able, shortening his reins, shoving his heels down, and sitting deeper in the saddle, but he wasn’t fast enough. A buckskin mare came tearing down the trail from behind them, before she and the cowgirl upon her back had even passed them, the whites of Blue’s eyes began to show, obviously the horse was picking up in yet more energy brought by the mare.
The blue roan reared up high on his hind legs, as if to show his displeasure at the invasion of a horse who was allowed to go tearing through the trail when he was not, so, furious, the gelding exploding through the top of himself, rearing up and letting an energic whinny escape his lungs.
“Blue!” Jesse roared as his mount pawed the air with his front hooves. Grabbing the rein hard in one hand, the young man pulled the leather string to his knee, forcing the horse’s head sideways and down and the beast came to earth with a great thud. Breathing heavily, Jesse swore under his breathe and half halted on the reins and occasionally spurring his steed slightly, trying to control his dancing hooves.

Katie scowled angrily at Jinx as she tried to pull the horse back to a trot. "Whoa now darlin", she murmured to encourage the mare to obey. But the mare just took the bit between her teeth and held it there, refusing to slow.
Katie groaned and sat deep in the saddle, using her legs to order the mare about. But unfortunatly, not even that worked to slow Jinx down. Katie was busy thinking of another way to stop there mare when she saw a low hanging branch before her.... then a loud deafening crack of wood.
All the air was knocked out of Katie's lungs as she crashed into the branch and was ripped from the saddle on Jinx's back. Then she hit the ground with a thud that might have made her seen stars if life were a cartoon. No wonder why they called her Jinx... she thought in annoyance as she tried to gain her breath back.

Annoyed, Jesse was finally able to control the shaken Blue. Turning him in fast, tight reining circles he was able to siphon off some of the gelding’s store of energy. Once his horse was standing still and controlled, Jesse stared after the cowgirl who had caused the problem in the first place. Annoyed and thoroughly game for revenge, he started down the trail at a swift trot, his hand temporarily flying to the pistol at his side, just in case he needed it. There was no telling what kind of people one might meet out here, there were some dangerous people in these days.
As Blue proceeded down the trail, he spotted a human figure lying flat on the ground. He slowed Blue to a walk and walked the horse right up to her. Blue stopped, his hoof and inch from her skull, the horse breathed hard, but was well trained under Jesse’s hand and would not raise the hoof.
“Howdy, your little bronco ride backfired, didn’t it.” Jesse said coldly to the woman, laying the ground.

Katie looked up at the man looking down at her, mounted on the gelding. Oh thats just peachy... she thought before rolling away quickly. She had her lungs in use again. "If I remember rightly good sir it was the pressence of your gelding that set my mare in hay-wire", she returned, just as coldly. "But she is called Jinx for a reason..."
She cast a glance in the mares direction that had stopped a few paces off and was happily grazing. 10 seconds... That was all she needed to get to the horse, mount up and gallop off if this man turned out to be a threat. An extra 3 or so if she needed to draw her gun.
"But ofcourse you would know that horses are always flightly in the mornin".

Jesse shook with anger.
“Just a minute, lady, I’m not finished with you!” He said, raising his voice forcefully. “If you remember rightly, I was walking along at my ease when your nag came tearing around that corner and spooked my horse, and then you have the nerve to go running off and claim it my horse that caused the spooking? Well, excuse me, ma’am for contradicting you, but I believe I’m in the right this time.” He said, pushing Blue into a trot after her. She thought she was so cool, racing around on her horse at break-neck speed, so arrogant. Jesse had had enough of adults acting superior over teenagers. Sick of it.

((she's in her 20's))
Katie glared at him and dodged his moving horse. "I couldn't stop her..... if you had been watching I was pulling back on the reins but she had the bit between her teeth", she snapped. "And my 'nag' is a purebred quarter horse in her prime of 3 years. Far from being a common 'nag' as you put it".
Katie cast another glance over at Jinx. Should she run.... she had noticed that this guy also had a gun.... Katie was quick on the draw... but would this guy draw while her back was turned? She hoped not.

((And he’s 17))
“Could stop her, eh?” Jesse said with a mocking laugh. “And you say you can ride?” He continued still mocking her. “Oh I see,” he continued, “That little Quarter horse of yours is in its ‘prime’? Excuse me, but it looks to me as if you’ve got an untrained, wild, baby on your hands.” He finished.
Jesse was not one to normally be so rude, but he was mighty irritated in the way she had treated him, just racing by, and then have the nerve to speak to him this way. He noticed she carried a gun, not a friendly object in the hands of a person whom one didn’t like, but then he had a gun too, it wasn’t as if she was armed and he wasn’t…
